This Glen Rock, New Jersey house has been inhabited continuously since before the Revolutionary War - well over 200 years. Expanded three times over the years, its first residents were farmers, then much later, New York commuters. Now it is home to a family of three who live and work there, with a big internet connection and a home office tucked into the eaves, wires stringing across the creaky wood floor. The current concept brings this historic structure squarely into the 21st century, style and character intact. The design leaves the current house unchanged except for a kitchen renovation; and links a new multiuse barn structure and garage to the old house with a delicate, green-roofed breezeway. The barn is both a modern and ancient component. Housing guest quarters, new work space and room for a ballroom dance party, furnishings will be spare and details will be minimal, for maximum flexibility. A spa bath is a special treat, and the connection to the garage means warm and dry access to home on chilly days. The breezeway is a light, respectful link to the old house and provides a gracious entry to both new and old spaces.
